Czech Leader's Globe Purchase Draws International Attention and Ridicule
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis has become the subject of widespread social media mockery after revealing he purchased an expensive globe specifically to locate Greenland. The political leader made the comments during a press briefing on Monday when questioned about his government's position regarding the escalating diplomatic tensions between the United States and Denmark.
Expensive Geography Lesson
The 71-year-old billionaire politician told reporters he spent 15,000 Czech koruna (approximately $720) on what he described as "a lovely, large" globe. "I have bought this globe to see exactly where this Greenland is," Babis explained. This purchase stands in stark contrast to standard globes available in the Czech market, which typically retail for up to 1,000 koruna.
Babis, who leads a three-party coalition government that includes eurosceptic and far-right elements, has positioned himself as a staunch supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump. The autonomous Danish territory of Greenland has recently gained international attention after Trump threatened to seize control of the strategically important island, creating significant diplomatic friction within NATO.
Social Media Reaction and Political Context
Online platforms quickly filled with jokes and criticism directed at the Czech leader. One social media user created a mock news article suggesting scammers had sold an expensive globe to "a gullible pensioner." Another user, identified as "BezeLzi" (meaning "NoLies"), suggested Babis should also locate Ukraine on his new globe to understand the proximity of the ongoing conflict, referencing the prime minister's previous rejection of military aid to Kyiv.
In a subsequent Facebook video posted on Tuesday, Babis defended his purchase by arguing that conventional maps distort geographical realities. "On this beautiful globe, you can see the real size of Greenland against the United States and Europe," he stated. The prime minister further noted the globe's utility for understanding geopolitical proximity, adding, "And here, in close proximity, is Russia and if there were a conflict, heaven forbid, the rocket would not fly long."
Market Impact and Broader Implications
The political controversy has had tangible effects on consumer behavior within the Czech Republic. Ondrej Sveda, a spokesperson for the Heureka price comparison website, reported a dramatic 420 percent increase in searches for globes since Babis made his initial comments. "We have seen a growth of hundreds of searches," Sveda confirmed to AFP.
Despite the social media backlash, Babis offered a philosophical response to the criticism. "I have entertained some people and some are laughing at me, because their brains are different from mine," he remarked. The prime minister has maintained control over foreign policy since taking office in December 2025, though this incident represents a notable stumble in his international positioning.
Meanwhile, Trump has reportedly backed away from his aggressive stance toward Greenland, though the diplomatic tensions have highlighted the complex geopolitical landscape facing European leaders. The incident underscores how seemingly minor political statements can quickly escalate into international news stories in the age of social media.
