Premier Danielle Smith Champions Don Cherry for Order of Canada Recognition
Danielle Smith Backs Don Cherry for Order of Canada

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has publicly endorsed the campaign to appoint legendary hockey commentator Don Cherry to the Order of Canada, calling the recognition long overdue for a national icon.

Premier's Unwavering Support

In a statement released on Friday, Premier Smith expressed her full backing for Cherry's nomination, emphasizing his significant contributions to Canadian sports and culture. "This shouldn't even be up for debate. Don Cherry is a Canadian icon and a hockey legend," Smith declared. "His contributions to Canada sport and culture are undeniable and the work he did to honour our nation's veterans was an invaluable contribution to our country."

A Decades-Long Campaign

For years, Canadians from various backgrounds have advocated for Cherry, now 92 years old, to receive the prestigious national honor. The Order of Canada list includes thousands of individuals, yet Cherry's name remains conspicuously absent despite his decades of influence.

Conservative MP Andrew Lawton recently initiated a formal nomination, stating: "For decades Don Cherry has celebrated hockey, honoured veterans and said what millions think — without apology." Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has also endorsed the petition, describing Cherry as someone who "embodies what it means to be a proud Canadian."

Previous Recognition and Current Controversy

Cherry previously received the Order of Ontario from Premier Doug Ford, who visited the commentator personally to present the honor. "No one is more deserving in this country than you," Ford told Cherry during the ceremony. "You're the most patriotic Canadian I've ever met."

However, the campaign faces opposition from some quarters. A Quebec Conservative member of parliament has argued that the Order of Canada should be reserved for individuals who "embody the values of inclusion, respect and unity," suggesting Cherry's outspoken style might not align with these principles.

The Cherry Phenomenon

Don Cherry, affectionately known as "Grapes" to fans, became a cultural institution through his hockey commentary and distinctive personality. His authentic, speak-his-mind approach resonated with millions of Canadians who tuned in specifically for his intermission segments during hockey broadcasts.

"He was authentic, the real deal," noted observers of Cherry's career. "He spoke to us not at us. Many Canadians stayed during the intermission in the hockey game watching the screen with the volume turned way up to hear what Grapes had to say."

Cultural Impact Beyond Sports

Smith highlighted Cherry's broader influence, noting that his "word and opinion about our national sport is still treated as hockey gospel by millions of Canadians." The premier emphasized that Cherry "will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Canadians" for both his sports commentary and his work honoring military veterans.

While Cherry's unfiltered opinions occasionally generated controversy throughout his career, supporters argue this authenticity represents what many Canadians appreciate about his character. As Smith concluded in her endorsement: "So, put the puck in the net and give Grapes the recognition he deserves."
