An Edmonton man is facing multiple firearms-related charges following an incident of public endangerment at the Churchill LRT station in late April. The event unfolded on Sunday, April 26, when Edmonton police were called at 6:53 p.m. to assist EMS workers at the station. According to authorities, the man persistently interfered with emergency medical services as they attempted to help an injured individual.
Arrest and Charges
In a news release issued on Thursday, police reported that officers arrested the man and subsequently searched him, allegedly discovering a firearm in his backpack. No other injuries to the public were reported during the incident. Skylar McGilvery, 30, is now facing five charges, including possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public, possession of a firearm knowing possession was unauthorized, careless use of a firearm, and two counts of possessing a prohibited firearm. McGilvery is also alleged to have been in breach of a lifetime firearms ban resulting from a previous manslaughter charge.
Public Safety Concerns
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about public safety at transit stations. Police emphasized that the quick response prevented any escalation, and they are reminding the public to report suspicious behavior. The accused remains in custody pending a court appearance.
