Since Toronto Police Const. Marc Pinizzotto was shot to death on June 11, five other cops have been shot or shot at in Canada. Two Montreal officers were struck, two RCMP officers in Saskatchewan were shot, and a Peel Regional Police officer was shot at three times — all within less than two weeks of Pinizzotto's murder.
Funeral Highlights Ongoing Danger
As the Greater Toronto Area holds its second police funeral in less than a week, the string of attacks underscores the risks officers face daily. Pinizzotto, 43, was killed while executing a search warrant in North York. The guns police were trying to seize had allegedly been used in 27 previous shootings, including at the U.S. consulate, Jewish synagogues, and schools.
“This is one of the reasons a funeral like today is important,” said columnist Joe Warmington. “It reminds us to be grateful for the brave men and women who are prepared to sacrifice their lives to protect others.”
Montreal Officer Killed in Shootout
Montreal police Const. Mohamed Lamine Benredouane was gunned down in a wild shootout involving 25-year-old Seth Scott Hatfield from Alberta. A female officer was also shot and remains in hospital. Hatfield's 104-page manifesto, found in his room, allegedly called for violence against real estate brokerages, multinational corporations, and elite politicians, listing targets such as BlackRock, Blackstone, IBM, Microsoft, and Boeing.
“These people, the rulers of the present state of things, are the people who are guilty; and are the ones who actually need and deserve to be liquidated,” the manifesto stated, according to reports. It also targeted “elite bankers, elite politicians, influential Zionists, and war hawks.”
Escalating Violence Across Canada
The attacks follow a pattern of violence against police and uniformed personnel, including the murders of Mounties in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and the terror slayings of soldiers near Montreal and Ottawa. In each case, police intervention potentially prevented further carnage, as the alleged killers were armed and dangerous.
Pinizzotto's funeral was attended by his wife Andrea and their 14-year-old twins, Daniella and Dominic. Accused shooter Nicholas Bennett, 19, remains in hospital under guard. Officers from Montreal also attended to pay respects to their fallen colleague.
“These men and women who serve in law enforcement are prepared to die to protect society from horrors like what has occurred too many times this month,” Warmington wrote. The article concluded with a call to honour their sacrifice.
