The stabbings took place amid heightened security in New York City, with U.S. President Donald Trump expected to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Monday night at Madison Square Garden, located directly across from Penn Station. Trump recently accepted an invitation to the game from New York Knicks owner James Dolan.

Security measures intensified

Knicks fans, whose team leads the San Antonio Spurs 2-0 in the best-of-seven series, were advised on Saturday to bring minimal items to Madison Square Garden and to expect airport-style security screening upon entry, as reported by CNBC.

A planned watch party outside the arena was canceled as a joint decision by the New York Police Department and the Secret Service. An NYPD statement explained, "This was done fully in coordination with the Secret Service because of the presidential visit. We expect watch parties at Madison Square Garden to resume for Game 4."

Security has also been ramped up in nearby East Rutherford, New Jersey, which is set to host its first FIFA World Cup match next Saturday between Brazil and Morocco.
