Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) harshly suggested that critical Americans and democratic socialists can “leave” the country while defending capitalism during a Newsmax appearance Thursday.
McClain's Remarks on Socialism and Capitalism
McClain was asked about the “socialist momentum” within the Democratic Party, given the recent victories by progressive and democratic socialist candidates in a variety of elections and primaries.
“Well, let’s be honest, nothing’s free. Last I checked, the teachers — are they teaching for free?” McClain began. “The grocery stores — [New York City Mayor Zohran] Mamdani wants free groceries … or government-run grocery stores.” “That’s great,” she sarcastically added. “Free everything. So the people are teaching for free? The people are working for free? Someone has to pay the bill.”
Defending Capitalism and the Constitution
McClain then moved on to the system of capitalism, also claiming that the Constitution is “the envy of the world.”
“People risk their lives to come to America because of what we have. Capitalism,” she said. “We have a democracy. We have freedom of speech. We have love of country.”
Then McClain shared a pointed message for those who don’t share her views on capitalism.
“And for the people in our country who want to turn this country into a communist country, leave, you’re free to leave. The beauty about America is you can leave,” she said. “Go to Europe, where they’re experiencing this [record-breaking] heat wave, and they don’t have any air conditioning ... see how well that works for you. I’m proud to be an American.”
Dismissing Socialist Momentum
When asked what she thinks is behind the wave of democratic socialist momentum, McClain dismissed it as them “selling you a bill of goods.”
“I mean, I’d love to be able to eat McDonald’s and chocolate cake and look like a supermodel. That’s just not reality, right?” she asked. “If you want something, you have to work for it. You have to earn it. It’s not given to you. It’s not free.”
