Marjorie Taylor Greene Condemns Franklin Graham Over Trump Jesus Image Defense
Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, launched a fierce verbal assault on Thursday against Reverend Franklin Graham, a prominent evangelical ally of former President Donald Trump. The controversy centers on Graham's defense of Trump's now-deleted social media meme that portrayed the former president in a manner resembling Jesus Christ.
Greene's Scathing Social Media Rebuke
In a blistering post on the platform X, Greene accused Trump of deliberate manipulation and expressed outrage at Graham's supportive stance. "Trump knows what he is doing. He knows what he posted. He knows how to manipulate his followers. And he's not sorry, he never apologized," Greene declared emphatically. She further dismissed Trump's subsequent claim that he was depicted as a doctor rather than a religious figure, labeling that explanation as "absurd."
The former congresswoman did not mince words regarding Graham's actions, stating that "Franklin Graham making excuses for Trump posting himself as Jesus is one of the worst things I've seen." Greene pointed out that the original image Trump shared included satanic imagery above him, whereas typical depictions of Jesus show him in white garments with a red robe.
The Controversial AI-Generated Image and Trump's Defense
This inflammatory social media stunt occurred during a period when Trump was launching what critics described as unhinged attacks against Pope Leo XIV, who has been advocating for peace in the Middle East. When confronted about the AI-generated visual, Trump insisted he was portrayed "as a doctor" rather than as Jesus Christ, a defense that many found unconvincing.
Franklin Graham, one of Trump's most steadfast religious supporters from the right-wing Christian community, publicly backed the former president's explanation on X. Even as some conservative Christians expressed discomfort with the image, Graham asserted, "I do not believe President Trump would knowingly depict himself as Jesus Christ—that would certainly be inappropriate."
Graham's Detailed Justification
In his extended commentary, Graham provided a meticulous analysis of the controversial illustration. "When I looked at the illustration, I didn't jump to the same conclusion as some. There were no spiritual references—no halo, there were no crosses, no angels," he explained. Instead, Graham noted the presence of patriotic symbols including:
- A flag
- Soldiers
- A nurse
- Fighter planes
- Eagles
- The Statue of Liberty
Graham characterized the entire controversy as "a lot to do about nothing" and suggested that Trump's political opponents were "always foaming at the mouth at any possible opportunity to make him look bad."
Escalating Tensions and Further Controversy
Following the initial backlash and amid his continued criticism of the pope, Trump shared another provocative AI-generated image showing him being embraced by Jesus. Graham defended this subsequent post as well, remarking that he appreciated "the fact that this is a picture of Jesus whispering in his ear, or at least His hand on his shoulder, guiding him."
Greene responded with intensified criticism, arguing that Graham's role should be fundamentally different. "Franklin Graham of all people, who is frequently at the WH and with Trump, should be leading Trump to be a Christian, NOT telling other Christians that Trump did nothing wrong when he committed blasphemy," the former congresswoman asserted.
This public dispute highlights deepening fractures within conservative Christian circles regarding appropriate boundaries for political support and religious representation. The exchange between these two prominent figures reveals significant tensions about how faith intersects with political allegiance in contemporary American discourse.
