Iran Attacks Bahrain and Kuwait After U.S. Strikes, Threatens Talks
Iran Attacks Bahrain and Kuwait After U.S. Strikes

Iran attacked military targets in Bahrain and Kuwait on Saturday, retaliating against recent U.S. airstrikes and threatening to suspend negotiations aimed at ending the regional war. The escalation shattered a fragile ceasefire that had held for less than 48 hours.

Ceasefire Collapses Amid Renewed Hostilities

Maj.-Gen. (Ret’d) David Fraser, a military analyst for CTV News, said the ceasefire has “crumbled” as attacks continue between the United States, Iran, Lebanon, and Israel. The truce, brokered by international mediators, was intended to de-escalate tensions that have gripped the Middle East for months.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed strikes on Bahrain’s naval facilities and Kuwait’s air defense positions, claiming they were in response to U.S. bombings of Iranian-backed militias in Syria and Iraq. “Any nation that hosts American forces is a legitimate target,” a Guard statement said.

Threat to Peace Talks

Tehran also warned it would withdraw from upcoming peace talks mediated by Qatar and Oman. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said, “The United States has proven it cannot be trusted. Further negotiations are pointless while American bombs fall on our allies.”

The U.S. State Department condemned the attacks as “unprovoked aggression” and vowed to defend its partners. “Iran’s actions are a direct threat to regional stability,” said spokesperson Matthew Miller. “We will respond appropriately.”

Regional Fallout

Bahrain reported three soldiers wounded in the strike on its naval base, while Kuwait said its air defense systems intercepted most projectiles, with debris causing minor damage to civilian infrastructure. Both nations activated emergency response protocols and closed their airspace temporarily.

The conflict has drawn in multiple actors, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and Israeli forces along the northern border. On Friday, Israeli airstrikes hit targets in southern Lebanon, killing at least five militants, according to Lebanese security sources.

International Reaction

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, warning that the region is “on the brink of a full-scale war.” The UN Security Council scheduled an emergency session for Sunday.

China and Russia urged restraint, with Beijing calling for a return to diplomacy. “Military action only breeds more violence,” said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The attacks mark the first time Iran has directly targeted Gulf states since the 1980s Iran-Iraq War. Analysts say the escalation could draw in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which have already heightened military readiness.
