Johnson Falsely Claims Trump Only One to Negotiate with Iran

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Saturday made a false claim about Donald Trump while praising him for progress in talks to end the Iran conflict. Johnson wrote on X, "President Trump is the ONLY one who could have gotten Iran — the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism — to the negotiating table."

He added, "We are greatly encouraged to learn a PEACE DEAL in Iran is underway — and look forward to learning more about the specifics. Under President Trump’s leadership, our nation is stronger, more respected on the global stage, and safer than ever before."

Earlier, Trump announced that a peace deal with Iran has been "largely negotiated" after a call with world leaders. He said details would be released shortly, including the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

However, Trump is not the only one to negotiate with Iran. A community note on Johnson's post pointed out, "Obama and other world leaders have been able to get Iran to the negotiation table," linking to the State Department's summary of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) under President Barack Obama.

Critics on X quickly responded. MeidasTouch Network called the post "embarrassing." The account Republicans Against Trump wrote, "I had to double check this wasn’t a parody account. My God." Others noted that Obama achieved a historic agreement, and Trump later withdrew from it.

Former Representative Adam Kinzinger asked, "What? Didn’t Obama do that? Do you guys even stress test these tweets before they go out?" Analyst Daniel Davis added that a better deal was offered to Trump in February but he rejected it, choosing war instead.
