A Timely Choice for Governor General: Louise Arbour's Appointment
Louise Arbour: A Timely Choice for Governor General

Canada's appointment of Louise Arbour as Governor General arrives at precisely the right moment. Arbour's record is exceptional by any measure. As a Supreme Court justice, she helped shape Canada's constitutional framework. As chief prosecutor for the Rwanda and Yugoslav war crimes tribunals, she pursued accountability for atrocities — including the historic indictment of Slobodan Milošević, the first sitting head of state charged before an international tribunal. As UN high commissioner for human rights, she advanced the rule of law in some of the world's most difficult environments.

Why This Appointment Matters

What makes this appointment matter beyond the résumé is context. When parts of the country — Alberta most loudly — are actively testing how far performative politics can stretch constitutional norms, Rideau Hall needs someone whose career has been built on accountability, process, and institutional integrity over political expediency. Arbour doesn't simply represent those values. She has spent her career fighting for them on the world stage.

Privacy Breach Spoils Separatist Petition

The separatists who gained access to personal information on the Alberta voters list, nearly three million names, did so to assist in the gathering of signatures for their petition. An unknown number of separatists were encouraged and trained to use the Centurion Project app to locate, contact, convince or cajole people to sign.

Investigations by Elections Alberta and the RCMP will take time. In the meantime, a referendum based on the petition looms. We have no idea how many people accessed the voters list on the app or were given the information in another form. We don't know when it became available or how many times it was used to contact people on the voters list. We may never know.

Any use of this data was illegitimate since it was sourced from an illegal act. This has irrevocably tainted the entire petition and it must be annulled. Maybe the separatists can try again without cheating.

Hybrid Model Works in Hospice Care

You can't read or watch the news without seeing the debate about universal public health care versus private health care or some hybrid. I am not knowledgeable enough to not be compelled by arguments on both sides. But this article highlights an area of health care that nobody wants or needs to think about until you get that tapping on your door. My wife spent her last two weeks in the Pilgrims Hospice, a non-profit facility which until recently was completely funded by the generosity of Edmontonians, only now being partially funded by AHS.

This facility controls pain of the residents but also the terrible pain of those around them. You might say this is technically a 'private care facility' for the more extremely polarized in the debate. We need more like these and this hybrid works well in this life-altering situation. This is not a contest to see who is the smartest person in the room; these are real issues and real people.
