Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to clearly state what leverage Canada possesses in ongoing trade negotiations with the United States. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Poilievre criticized the Liberal government for its handling of trade relations, particularly in light of recent tensions with the Trump administration.
Poilievre emphasized that Canadians deserve transparency regarding the government's strategy. 'The prime minister needs to tell Canadians what cards he holds in these talks,' Poilievre said. 'If he has no leverage, he should admit it. If he does, he should explain how he plans to use it.'
The comments come as Carney prepares to meet with European Union leaders amid growing trade friction between Canada and the United States. The prime minister is currently in Armenia for the European Political Community summit, where he is expected to discuss strategies to strengthen economic ties with Europe.
Poilievre also expressed concern about the impact of US trade policies on Canadian industries, warning that a weak negotiating position could harm workers and businesses. 'We need a prime minister who will stand up for Canada, not one who bows down to foreign pressure,' he added.
The trade dispute has intensified in recent weeks, with the US imposing tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, prompting retaliatory measures from Ottawa. Carney has not yet responded directly to Poilievre's latest remarks, but his office reiterated that the government is committed to defending Canadian interests.
Political analysts suggest that the issue could become a key battleground in the next federal election, with both parties seeking to position themselves as defenders of Canadian economic sovereignty.
