The Windsor Police Service officially commenced its annual Police Week celebrations on Thursday at Devonshire Mall, drawing attention to public safety through interactive displays of specialized equipment, a police robot, and a vintage police cruiser.
Annual Tradition Since 1970
Since 1970, Police Week has served as a platform to recognize local law enforcement agencies for their dedicated service to the community. Citizens are given the opportunity to meet officers and their partners, engaging in conversations about the various services provided by the police force.
Theme: Protecting Ontario Through Service
This year's theme, Protecting Ontario Through Service, underscores the efforts of police officers and law enforcement partners across the province who contribute to community safety, according to the city's police department.
Chief for a Day Ceremony
During the opening ceremony, Victoria Martin, a grade 6 student at St. Gabriel Catholic Elementary School, was named Chief for a Day. Clad in a Windsor police uniform, she had the opportunity to try on a tactical police helmet. Local students are selected for this role after submitting letters explaining why they would make strong candidates, a yearly highlight of the Police Week program.
Windsor Police Const. Drew Palmer, a member of the Emergency Services Unit, assisted Victoria in adjusting night vision goggles during the event.
Community Engagement and Education
The event, held annually in May at Devonshire Mall, brings together municipal, provincial, and federal law enforcement officers along with other community partners. Families are invited to visit information booths for special activities, demonstrations, and displays organized by police agencies and community groups. These activities aim to educate visitors on crime prevention, public safety, and security measures.
Notable displays included a vintage Windsor Police cruiser, which attracted significant attention from attendees. The event also featured interactive demonstrations, such as controlling a tactical robot, offering hands-on experiences for visitors of all ages.
