Carney Expresses Concern Over Trump's Tariff Threat on Greenland NATO Allies
Canada 'Concerned' with Trump Tariff Threat on Greenland

Prime Minister Mark Carney has voiced Canada's serious concern regarding a new tariff threat from former U.S. President Donald Trump targeting European allies over planned NATO activities in Greenland.

Carney's Firm Stance on Sovereignty

Speaking at a news conference in Qatar on Sunday, January 18, 2026, Carney was unequivocal in his response. "It's a serious situation," he stated. "We're concerned about this escalation, to be absolutely clear." The Prime Minister had just concluded a three-day visit to China before travelling to Doha.

Carney firmly asserted that decisions about Greenland's future are solely for Denmark and Greenland to make. He emphasized that Canada will always support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations, regardless of their location.

The Trigger: Tariffs Over NATO Exercises

The diplomatic tension stems from an announcement by Donald Trump. He declared a 10 per cent tariff on eight European nations, including Denmark, with plans to increase it to 25 per cent in June 2026. This punitive economic measure is a response to those countries stating they would undertake token NATO military exercises in the semi-autonomous Danish territory of Greenland.

Carney defended the planned exercises, noting that "the security of Greenland very much falls within the responsibilities of NATO." He confirmed he has already discussed the matter with European leaders and other NATO partners.

Potential Face-to-Face in Davos

The Prime Minister's next destination is Switzerland for the World Economic Forum in Davos. Notably, Donald Trump is also scheduled to attend the high-profile gathering. It remains unknown whether the two leaders will arrange a meeting on the sidelines.

When asked what message he would deliver to President Trump if they speak, Carney replied directly: "I'm going to say everything I just said." This indicates Canada's position is fixed and will be communicated clearly should an opportunity arise.

The situation highlights ongoing geopolitical friction within the NATO alliance and underscores Canada's role in advocating for diplomatic norms and the sovereignty of allied nations amidst economic threats.
