Bryan Adams, the Grammy and Juno-winning singer known for hits like Cuts Like a Knife and Summer of '69, has released the most political single of his career for Canada Day 2026. Titled 51st State, the track is a defiant pro-Canada anthem that directly addresses calls for annexation by the United States.
Lyrics and Message
The chorus of 51st State delivers a clear message: “Let me give it to you straight / When you’re talking about my home / You better show some respect / ‘Cuz up here we take care of our own / So let me give you some advice, mister / You might have too much on your plate / Go n’ load us up with tariffs / But we’ll never be the 51st State.”
Adams explained his motivation: “I wanted to write something about Canada because Canada is home. There is more that binds us than divides us. This is a tribute to the pride and spirit of my fellow Canadians — the rest is just noise.”
Context and Inspiration
The single responds to repeated comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who first floated the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state in 2024. Trump posted “51st State!” on June 2, 2026, alongside a Bloomberg article about Canada’s economic downturn. U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra reposted the comment. Adams’ lyrics include the line: “But the 49th parallel / Has become a line drawn in the sand.”
At 2 minutes and 17 seconds, 51st State is a tribute to Canadian communities and culture, blending Adams’ signature hooks with a political edge. It also references tariffs and the persistent annexation rhetoric, which has extended to discussions about Greenland.
Tour and Availability
Adams is currently touring in support of his latest album, Roll With The Punches, his first release on his own label, recorded partly at his Vancouver studio The Warehouse. He will tour Canada from August to September 2026, concluding on Sept. 15 at Rogers Forum in Abbotsford. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.ca. Fans can expect 51st State to be a highlight of the shows, bringing “the house down (and the elbows up).”
