Calgary's Sikh community is preparing for the annual Nagar Kirtan parade and festival on Saturday, an event expected to draw crowds of more than 80,000 people. The celebration marks Vaisakhi, a major Sikh festival that commemorates the birth of the Khalsa tradition, an initiation or baptism ceremony.
Parade and Festival Details
The parade begins at the Dashmesh Culture Centre at 9:30 a.m. and concludes at Prairie Winds Park, where festivities will continue throughout the day. Attendees can enjoy food, vendors, speakers, and the singing of religious hymns. The Nagar Kirtan procession involves singing hymns and distributing food, highlighting Sikh values of peace, unity, and community service.
Ranbir Singh Parmar, chairman of the Dashmesh Culture Centre, emphasized the inclusive nature of the event. “We spread the message of love, equality,” he said. “We like to welcome everybody to just try it out. It’s gonna be fun. I hope everybody’s going to like it.”
Significance of Vaisakhi
The Khalsa tradition began in 1699 as a challenge to the caste system, signifying the equality of all people and a fight against injustice. This year marks the 28th annual Nagar Kirtan in Calgary, with attendance growing each year. While a majority of attendees are from the Sikh community, many members of the Hindu and Muslim communities also participate, and all Calgarians are welcome.
Community and City Support
The event, one of Alberta’s largest parades, requires months of volunteer preparation. Mayor Jeromy Farkas is scheduled to address the congregation at 9 a.m. The City of Calgary partners with the Dashmesh Culture Centre annually to ensure safety and smooth operations, providing emergency personnel and assisting with traffic control, parking, and transit.
Traffic, Parking, and Transit Impacts

Some areas of Prairie Winds Park are closed for the weekend, including north and south parking lots from May 8 to 11, tennis courts from May 8 to 10, and the cricket pitch from May 6 to 12.
