ASIRT Launches Investigation into Woman's Death After Police Arrest in South Edmonton

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has initiated a formal investigation into the death of a woman who passed away shortly after being arrested by Edmonton police officers in the Mill Woods area last month. This incident, which occurred on March 26, has raised serious concerns and prompted a Level 1 inquiry under the Police Act, typically reserved for cases involving fatalities or significant injuries.

Details of the Incident

According to ASIRT's news release issued on Tuesday, the events unfolded around 6:30 p.m. when officers responded to a disturbance call at a restaurant in Mill Woods. Witnesses reported that the woman was behaving erratically, yelling, and frightening customers. Upon the arrival of law enforcement, she fled into a nearby restaurant and concealed herself in a washroom.

Officers located and arrested the woman, subsequently summoning paramedics to the scene. However, she did not cooperate with their attempts to assess her medical condition. At approximately 7 p.m., she was transported to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) detainee management unit, a specialized facility designed for processing and monitoring at-risk or vulnerable detainees.

Unresponsive and Hospitalization

During the transport, the woman continued to exhibit erratic behavior. Upon arrival at the detainee management unit, staff discovered her unresponsive and immediately called emergency services. She was rushed to a hospital but died a short time later. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed, as the investigation remains in its early stages.

The Police Review Commission has directed ASIRT to handle this as a Level 1 matter, which encompasses incidents involving serious injury or death, as well as sensitive concerns regarding officer conduct. This classification underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the arrest and subsequent events.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Assistance

ASIRT has emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and in its preliminary phases. Investigators are actively seeking individuals who may have witnessed any portion of the incident or possess relevant video recordings. Those with information are encouraged to contact ASIRT at 780-644-1483 to assist with the inquiry.

This case highlights the critical role of independent oversight in policing, particularly in incidents resulting in fatalities. ASIRT's involvement aims to ensure transparency and accountability, providing answers to the public and the woman's family during this difficult time.
