In a brazen daytime robbery that disrupted a charitable holiday event, masked bandits armed with hammers and pepper spray targeted a jewelry store at Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket, leaving a trail of violence and stolen merchandise in their wake.
Chaos During Christmas Charity Drive
The incident occurred on November 17, 2025, while York Regional Police officers were participating in the annual Holiday Heroes kick-off event at the mall located at 17600 Yonge Street. The program, now in its 29th year, has helped over 109,000 individuals and families in need through donations of toys, clothes, and essential items.
According to Const. Lisa Moskaluk, the situation escalated quickly when officers—some in uniform and others in plain clothes—responded to reports of a jewelry store robbery in progress. "During the incident, one of our officers (not in uniform) and a security guard confronted the suspects, who were armed with hammers," Moskaluk stated.
Violent Confrontation and Escape
The confrontation turned violent when the suspects deployed an aerosol irritant—pepper spray—against the responding officer and security guard. Both suffered minor injuries but have since been treated and are recovering.
Police believe approximately five suspects participated in the robbery, using hammers to smash display cases at Peoples Jewellers before fleeing in a waiting vehicle positioned near the store exit. The quick police response likely prevented the thieves from stealing as much merchandise as they had intended.
Community Impact and Investigation
Despite the violent interruption, York Regional Police emphasized their commitment to both public safety and community support. Const. James Dickson highlighted that the Holiday Heroes program continues its mission to raise $250,000 in monetary and gift card donations this season, alongside collecting essential items for families in need.
Authorities are now seeking public assistance in identifying the suspects. Investigators have indicated that additional charges—including assaulting police and security personnel—may be filed alongside robbery charges if the individuals are apprehended.
The incident underscores the risks faced by law enforcement and security professionals during routine operations, particularly when criminals come prepared with weapons designed to incapacitate their pursuers.
