Calgary Police Charge Man and Woman Following Months-Long Extortion Investigation

The Calgary Police Service has announced charges against a man and a woman following a comprehensive investigation into multiple extortion incidents that occurred in the city's northeast during 2024. This case, while involving a member of the South Asian community, is not connected to the ongoing series of extortions targeting that community that police are collaboratively investigating with ALERT.

Victim Reports Multiple Extortion Attempts

According to police, a woman came forward in September 2024 to report numerous extortion attempts and threats to her safety that had occurred throughout the year. Investigators determined that the victim was contacted by the offenders on six separate occasions between August and October 2024. During these contacts, the perpetrators demanded that she provide money and valuables.

"If she did not comply, she was threatened that she would be subjected to various acts of violence," police stated in a news release, noting that the victim and suspects were known to each other.

Police Operation Leads to Arrests

Following their investigation into the reported incidents, Calgary police launched an operation in December 2025 to apprehend the offenders. This operation resulted in the arrest of two individuals who now face multiple criminal charges.

Jaspreet Gill, a 37-year-old Calgary resident, has been charged with six counts of extortion. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 10 to answer to these allegations.

Harpreet Gill, 28, has been charged with one count of fraud over $5,000, one count of fraud under $5,000, and two counts of theft of a motor vehicle. Her court appearance is set for April 6. Police clarified that the charges against Harpreet Gill are unrelated to the extortion incidents but were discovered as a result of the law enforcement operation.

Police Commitment to Community Safety

Staff Sgt. Geoff Gawlinski of the Calgary Police Service General Investigations Unit emphasized the department's dedication to addressing these crimes. "We understand how deeply these incidents affect not only the victims, but also the broader community and their sense of safety," Gawlinski stated.

He added that officers remain committed to "thoroughly investigating these crimes and will continue to hold those responsible accountable."

Ongoing Investigations and Community Resources

While this particular case is not connected to other recent extortion reports, Calgary police noted that CPS and ALERT continue to collaboratively investigate a series of extortion-related incidents targeting the South Asian community.
