An assailant who attacked a prominent Calgary radio host over critical on-air comments is now facing potential immigration consequences as a result of his guilty plea, according to statements made in court this week. The incident occurred on September 29, 2024, when Dilpreet Singh approached Rishi Kumar, who uses the professional name Rishi Nagar, in the parking lot of the Rio Banquet Hall. Kumar, the prime time talk show host for CKYR 106.7 RED FM, was leaving an event when Singh and another man confronted him about comments made during a September 25 broadcast.
According to Crown prosecutor Steven Johnston, who read an agreed statement of facts into the court record, Singh took offense to Kumar's discussion of an incident outside the Dashmesh Cultural Centre. The radio host had connected a firearms incident to a peaceful protest at the Nagar Kirtan festival held at Prairie Winds Park in May 2022.
The confrontation turned violent quickly, with Singh punching Kumar in the face, knocking off his glasses. During the brief but intense assault, Singh reportedly yelled in Punjabi that Kumar had no business making what he considered an inaccurate broadcast. Kumar fell to the ground during the attack and suffered multiple blows to his head.

The assault resulted in significant injuries to Kumar's eye, including blunt trauma that required cataract surgery. Medical professionals have indicated the attack could lead to future complications including retinal detachment, additional cataract surgery, or glaucoma. Following the incident, Kumar held a press conference where he characterized the attack as an assault on free press, vowing it would not silence his reporting.
Defence counsel Peter Hoare informed Justice Peter Barley that his client, Singh, was fully aware of the ramifications of his guilty plea to assault causing bodily harm. "In this particular instance there are potential immigration consequences," Hoare told the court, highlighting how criminal convictions can affect immigration status in Canada.
