Canadian Tourist Faces Felony Charges for Alleged Flamingo Torture in Las Vegas
Canadian Charged with Torturing Flamingo at Las Vegas Hotel

A Canadian tourist has been charged with multiple felony counts of animal abuse following a disturbing incident at a Las Vegas hotel, where he allegedly stole and tortured a flamingo named Peachy. The case has sparked outrage and legal action, highlighting severe allegations of cruelty against wildlife.

Alleged Theft and Torture at Flamingo Hotel

Michael Fairbarn, a 33-year-old man from Ontario, is accused of breaking into the flamingo habitat at the Flamingo hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. According to court records obtained by KLAS, Fairbarn injured several birds before snatching Peachy, one of the hotel's beloved flamingos. Surveillance footage reviewed by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police shows him entering the habitat around 5 a.m. on a Tuesday and grabbing the bird.

Police allege that Fairbarn not only took Peachy but also injured other animals in the process, including "pinning down" a second bird and preventing it from escaping. The footage captures him in an elevator with Peachy under his arm, accompanied by another man, and later shows him wrangling the bird by the neck and legs in a hallway as he headed toward his hotel room.

Evidence and Disturbing Details

Inside the hotel room, police discovered a "large bloody feather" and found several photos and videos on Fairbarn's phone depicting him with the animal. The evidence allegedly shows him choking the flamingo and throwing it on the floor. In one clip, Fairbarn laughs and declares he is "taking [the bird] home," adding to the severity of the accusations.

During police questioning, Fairbarn claimed he entered the habitat because he saw a flamingo in distress and attempted to "pop" its wing back into place, citing his experience as a "farm boy." However, animal control officials contradicted this, stating that he actually "pulled the wing out of the bird's body," causing significant injury to Peachy and other birds in the habitat.

Legal Proceedings and Hotel Response

Fairbarn faces four counts of felony animal abuse. At a probable cause hearing, Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Suzan Baucum set bail at $12,000, with conditions including no possession of animals, surrender of his passport, and staying away from the Las Vegas Strip. He posted bond following the hearing, and his next court appearance is scheduled for March 9.

Caesars Entertainment, the owner of the Flamingo hotel, issued a statement calling the incident "deeply distressing." They confirmed that Peachy and the other birds are under the care of veterinarians and the hotel's animal care team, with hopes for a full recovery. The case has drawn attention to animal welfare issues and the legal consequences of such acts.

This incident underscores the importance of protecting wildlife and the serious penalties associated with animal abuse. As the legal process unfolds, authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the allegations against Fairbarn.
