Cochrane RCMP Investigation Leads to Major $450,000 Drug Seizure
A significant drug trafficking operation has been disrupted by the Cochrane RCMP Crime Reduction Unit in collaboration with the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region. The investigation culminated in the seizure of multiple kilograms of controlled substances, with an estimated street value of approximately $450,000.
Charges Filed Against Calgary Suspect
As a result of this extensive operation, 42-year-old Dylan Watson from Calgary has been charged with two counts each of possession for the purposes of trafficking cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine. Watson was taken into custody and appeared in court in Calgary on March 12, 2026.
Timeline of the Investigation
The investigation began in April 2025 after authorities suspected a man of trafficking drugs between Calgary and Lethbridge. On February 26, 2026, RCMP located a vehicle linked to the suspect at a known problem address on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. The vehicle was later towed after the registered owner reported it had been taken without consent.
Cochrane RCMP confirmed that the suspect was actively involved in drug trafficking within the Stoney Nakoda First Nation community. This led officers to a storage locker in Airdrie, which belonged to the suspect. On March 9, 2026, RCMP executed a search warrant at the locker, seizing approximately 1.4 kilograms of controlled substances. The suspect was not present during this search.
Apprehension and Additional Seizures
On March 11, 2026, the suspect visited a tow yard in Cochrane where the previously towed vehicle was stored. The Cochrane RCMP General Investigation Section and Crime Reduction Unit, with assistance from the Southern Alberta GIS, established covert surveillance on the suspect. The operation also involved the Emergency Response Team, RCMP Police Dog Services, and Calgary Police HAWCS.
When the suspect left his vehicle and began walking away with a bag, police quickly and safely apprehended him. A search of the bag incidental to the arrest resulted in the seizure of an additional 2.7 kilograms of suspected drugs.
Total Seizure Details
The comprehensive investigation led to the seizure of the following items:
- 581.2 grams of suspected fentanyl
- 1,041 grams of suspected cocaine
- 2,472.4 grams of suspected methamphetamine
- 2.2 grams of suspected carfentanil
- $6,798 in Canadian currency
The combined street value of all seized drugs is estimated at $450,000. This bust highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat drug trafficking in the region, particularly involving dangerous substances like fentanyl and methamphetamine.
The investigation underscores the collaborative work between multiple RCMP units and local police forces in addressing serious drug-related crimes.
