Peel Regional Police have arrested a man in his 70s in connection with the targeted shooting death of a 62-year-old man inside a business at a commercial plaza on Monday morning in Mississauga.
The shooting occurred in the area of Kennedy Road and Matheson Boulevard.
Details of the Incident
Around 8:30 a.m., police were called to the area regarding an unresponsive person. Peel Police Constable Laurie McCann told reporters at the scene on Monday afternoon that officers, along with fire and paramedics, located a male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, the man succumbed to his injuries. The investigation commenced immediately, leading to the arrest of a suspect. A firearm was also recovered at the scene.
McCann confirmed that the killing was targeted and that there is no ongoing danger to the public. She stated that the relationship between the suspect and the victim is unknown at this time, and the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
Investigation and Appeal for Information
McCann noted that someone inside the commercial building discovered the victim and called 911. Police are appealing for any witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage from the area to come forward. “We’re obviously asking if anyone has information that was in the area at the time, (has) dashcam (footage), we don’t have the exact time that it did happen,” she said. “But anywhere from the wee hours of the morning until we were called at 8:30 a.m., if they were in the area, may have video surveillance… to please call police.”
McCann added that even small pieces of evidence could be crucial, such as footage from vehicles, people walking, or vehicles leaving the parking lot. “Every little bit will help the investigators in this case,” she emphasized.
Charges Pending
McCann stated that any charges against the arrested man would be announced in a subsequent news release from Peel Police. The identities of the suspect and the deceased have not yet been released.
