Brampton Teen Accused of Hate-Motivated Vandalism
In a separate incident, a 14-year-old boy from Brampton has been charged with vandalizing the Tamil Genocide Memorial at Chinguacousy Park. The memorial was defaced with derogatory spray-painted messages on March 20, prompting an immediate response from Peel Regional Police.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers confirmed the vandalism and swiftly assigned the case to the Hate Crime Unit. Following a thorough investigation, the teenage suspect was arrested on Tuesday and now faces two counts of mischief over $5,000.
Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah issued a strong statement condemning the act, emphasizing that the force will not tolerate hate-motivated crimes. "People across the region have the right to feel safe in public spaces," he said, praising the Hate Crime Unit for their swift action in holding those responsible accountable.
Due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the name of the accused cannot be released. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to contact the Hate Crime Unit or Crime Stoppers anonymously to aid in the ongoing investigation.
