A Lethbridge sex offender has been charged with breaching lifetime conditions just hours after he was released from custody, police said Tuesday.

Details of the incident

The 47-year-old man was released Friday at 7 a.m. from custody after serving four years for sexual interference, child luring, possession of child pornography, sexual exploitation and uttering threats.

According to a Lethbridge police news release, at approximately 11:45 a.m. the same day, he was observed by police at the public library using a social media account online to view images of children. This action was contrary to a lifetime prohibition order.

Background of the prohibition order

The order was made after the man was convicted for sexually assaulting and exploiting two young girls in 2021 and 2022. It includes lifetime bans from attending any community centre, using the internet or other digital network unless in accordance with court conditions, and using any social media application designed to connect with strangers.

Charges and court appearance

Lethbridge resident James Robert George Martinac, 47, is charged with four counts of failing to comply with a prohibition order. After a bail hearing, Martinac was remanded into custody and is scheduled to make a court appearance Wednesday.
