Edmonton Police Service has announced the arrest and charging of a 56-year-old man in connection with a series of disturbing sexual assaults targeting women he allegedly met through popular dating applications. William McMullin faces a comprehensive list of criminal charges following an investigation that revealed a pattern of predatory behavior spanning multiple incidents.
Multiple Victims Come Forward with Similar Experiences
The investigation began in April 2025 when officers received an initial report of a sexual assault involving a woman who had connected with a man through a dating platform. Since that time, additional complainants have stepped forward with strikingly similar accounts of their experiences, prompting a deeper examination by authorities.
Pattern of Behavior Across Dating Platforms
Police detailed that in four separate incidents, women communicated with the suspect through various dating apps including Facebook Dating, Bumble, and Tinder. Following initial contact, the women were invited to the suspect's residence where investigators believe they were administered stupefying substances before being sexually assaulted.
The calculated nature of these assaults represents a profound breach of trust, according to Staff Sgt. Christa Laforce of the EPS sexual assault section. In an official release, Laforce emphasized the troubling methodology employed by the suspect, who allegedly used digital platforms to identify and target potential victims.
Comprehensive Criminal Charges Filed
On March 17, 2026, Edmonton police arrested William McMullin and charged him with multiple criminal offences including:
- Sexual assault
- Administering a stupefying substance
- Assault with a weapon
- Voyeurism
- Assault
- Mischief under $5,000
- Intimidation
- Unlawful confinement
- Criminal harassment
McMullin is currently being held in remand and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on March 27, 2026. The extensive list of charges reflects the severity and complexity of the alleged crimes uncovered during the police investigation.
Police Believe Additional Victims May Exist
Based on evidence gathered during their investigation, Edmonton police suspect there may be additional individuals who have been victimized by McMullin but have not yet come forward. Authorities are actively encouraging anyone who believes they may have been affected to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567.
"If you have been affected, you are not alone, and we encourage you to come forward," stated Staff Sgt. Laforce. "Police can help connect individuals with supports and resources specifically designed to assist victims of sexual violence."
The case highlights ongoing concerns about safety on digital dating platforms and serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that can accompany online connections. Edmonton police continue to investigate the matter thoroughly while providing support services to those affected by these alleged crimes.
