A Windsor police canine proved instrumental in tracking down and apprehending a suspect following an early morning break-in at a vacant school on the city's west side.
K9 Unit Responds to West End Incident
The incident unfolded in the early hours of January 6. Windsor police received a call regarding a break-in at a former elementary school located in the 1500 block of Wyandotte Street West.
Officers, including a K9 unit, were immediately dispatched to the scene. The police service deployed K9 officer Rolex and his handler to assist in the search for the suspect.
Perimeter Set, Canine Leads to Apprehension
Upon arrival, officers established a security perimeter around the property. Rolex and his handler then commenced a systematic search of the building's interior.
The police canine successfully located a man hiding inside the structure. Officers moved in and took the individual into custody without further incident.
Chainsaw Used, Drugs Allegedly Found on Suspect
According to police investigators, the suspect had allegedly used a chainsaw to force entry into the building and was inside attempting to steal materials.
Following the arrest, a search of the suspect was conducted. Officers allege they found and seized 10.5 grams of suspected crystal meth and 0.7 grams of suspected fentanyl in his possession.
A 26-year-old man now faces multiple criminal charges as a result of the incident. The charges include:
- Break-and-enter to a place other than a dwelling
- Possession of break-in instruments
- Two counts of unlawful possession of a Schedule I substance (related to the suspected drugs)
