Edmonton Police Investigate String of Home Robberies in Southwest Ravine Areas

Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has issued a public warning to residents in the Whitemud and Blackmud Creek regions of southwest Edmonton following a concerning series of break-and-enter home robberies that commenced in early January. Authorities are actively investigating seven separate incidents, all occurring at night, where suspects targeted homes in these ravine-adjacent neighborhoods.

Details of the Robberies and Suspect Vehicles

According to police, the houses were selected randomly, with the suspects "almost exclusively entering when the occupants are not at home." The method of entry typically involved smashing a rear window or glass door to gain access. Once inside, the perpetrators would quickly locate and steal items such as jewelry and high-end clothing before fleeing the scene.

Surveillance footage has captured two vehicles of interest: a Silver GMC Terrain, believed to be a 2024-2026 model, and a Ford Escape, suspected to be a 2023-2026 model. These vehicles were seen waiting outside the targeted homes, facilitating a swift escape for the suspects.

Police Recommendations for Home Security

In response to these incidents, EPS has provided a list of recommendations to help homeowners protect their properties and deter potential burglaries:

  • Leave some lights on inside the residence when departing.
  • Avoid posting travel plans on social media platforms.
  • Arrange for a friend, neighbor, or family member to check on your house during absences.
  • Invest in a comprehensive home security system that includes motion-activated lights, glass-break sensors, and interior cameras.
  • Store valuables in a safe or a well-hidden location within the home.
  • Maintain records such as serial numbers and photographs of valuable items to aid in recovery if stolen.

Community Cooperation and Reporting

Police are urging residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately. This includes noting any vehicles idling suspiciously in the neighborhood. Reports can be made to EPS directly at 780-423-4567. For those wishing to provide information anonymously, Crime Stoppers is available at 1-800-222-8477.

Additional resources on home security measures are accessible through the official EPS website. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to identify and apprehend the suspects involved in these targeted robberies.
