RCMP Corruption Investigation Includes Current and Former Calgary City Councillors
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have confirmed an ongoing corruption investigation that involves at least one current member of Calgary's city council and a former colleague, according to official statements released this week.
Mounties Confirm Active Investigation
RCMP spokeswoman Jessica Murphy of the federal policing northwest region stated in an email that authorities are currently examining allegations of corruption between current and former lawmakers and a local business. "The RCMP Federal Policing NWR can confirm we have an ongoing investigation relating to a referral we received from Calgary Police Services in October 2025," Murphy said. "To protect the integrity of this ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time."
The Calgary Police Service confirmed they handed over a complaint related to these allegations to the RCMP last fall. CPS spokeswoman Emma Poole stated, "The Calgary Police Service can confirm that a complaint was referred to the RCMP in October 2025. To protect the integrity and confidentiality of the ongoing investigative process, no further details will be released at this time."
Councillor Expresses Bewilderment
Ward 10 Coun. Andre Chabot revealed that warrants were served on him on March 19, expressing confusion about the accusations. "I'm hoping that somehow, it'll result in something that they can utilize," Chabot told reporters on Tuesday. "But at this point, I have no idea what they're investigating, but I'm fully cooperating with them."
Chabot's lawyer, Alain Hepner, strongly defended his client's innocence, stating, "He's done nothing wrong. I'm his counsel, he's done nothing wrong and he's been fully cooperative with the authorities and will be."
Former Councillor Also Under Scrutiny
Another individual under investigation is former Ward 4 Coun. Sean Chu, who decided not to run for re-election in last fall's civic election. His defense lawyer, Shamsher Kothari, confirmed that court-approved warrants targeted his client, expressing confidence in Chu's innocence.
"A number of judicial authorizations have been apparently granted and executed and my client has been cooperative throughout and respects the legal process," Kothari said in an email. "No charges have been laid and I look forward to a swift conclusion of this investigation."
There is currently no indication that charges have been filed against either man, though the investigation remains active and ongoing. The RCMP has emphasized the need to maintain the integrity of their investigative process by limiting public comments at this stage.
The investigation represents a significant development in Calgary municipal politics, with both current and former elected officials now subject to scrutiny by federal law enforcement authorities. The case originated with a complaint that Calgary police determined required federal investigation, leading to the October 2025 referral to the RCMP.
