Rhode Island Shooter's Gender Identity at Center of Family Disputes
Court documents have revealed that Robert Dorgan, the individual identified by authorities as the shooter in a tragic incident at a Rhode Island arena, was transgender and experienced significant family conflicts related to his gender identity. The shooting occurred on February 16, 2026, at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, resulting in multiple fatalities, including Dorgan himself.
Details of the Shooting and Family Background
According to Pawtucket Police, Dorgan opened fire during a family dispute at a high school hockey game, killing his ex-wife and injuring three of his children before taking his own life. A woman leaving the police station, who identified herself as his daughter, stated that Dorgan had mental health issues and was "very sick," adding, "He shot my family and he's dead now."
North Providence police reported that Dorgan had undergone gender reassignment surgery in 2020, and his father-in-law wanted him out of the family because of it. Authorities noted that Dorgan used both the name Robert and "Roberta." Court records indicate that the father-in-law allegedly used a slur against transgender individuals and threatened retaliation if Dorgan did not move out, though charges in that case were later dismissed.
Additional Family Conflicts and Legal Issues
Around the same time, Dorgan accused his mother of assaulting him, leading to charges of simple assault and battery and disorderly conduct, which were also dismissed. In divorce documents, Dorgan's then-wife initially cited "gender reassignment surgery, narcissistic + personality disorder traits" as reasons for separation before changing it to "irreconcilable differences." The divorce was finalized in 2021, with Dorgan listed as living in Jacksonville, Florida, and working as a truck driver.
It remains unclear whether these past disputes were directly connected to the shooting, as police have not publicly named a motive. However, the conflicts highlight ongoing tensions within Dorgan's family regarding his gender identity.
Social Media Activity Prior to the Incident
A day before the shooting, Dorgan, using the handle "Roberta Dorgano" on social media platform X, posted a trans-rights rant in response to comments by actor Kevin Sorbo. In the post, Dorgan wrote, "Keep bashing us. But do not wonder why we Go BERSERK," suggesting heightened emotional distress. This activity has drawn attention as potential context for the violent outburst.
The investigation continues as authorities piece together the events leading up to the tragedy, with community members and hockey parents expressing shock and grief outside the arena in the aftermath.
