Windsor-Essex Police Charge Six Drivers for Impaired and Dangerous Driving Over Weekend
Law enforcement authorities in Windsor and Essex County have taken decisive action against impaired and dangerous driving, resulting in the arrest and charging of six individuals over the recent weekend. The incidents, which involved multiple collisions and alarming behavior, highlight ongoing concerns about road safety in the region.
Multiple Incidents Lead to Arrests
According to official reports, Windsor Police Service responded to several calls that culminated in impaired driving charges. In one particularly concerning case early Saturday morning, officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of Westminster Avenue around 8:30 a.m. after receiving reports of an unresponsive man behind the wheel of a running vehicle.
Upon arrival, police allegedly discovered the 38-year-old driver slumped over the steering wheel. When officers attempted to rouse him by knocking on the window, the situation escalated dramatically. The man reportedly woke up, placed his vehicle in reverse, and struck a police cruiser positioned behind him. He then accelerated forward, colliding with another cruiser that had been stationed in front of his vehicle.
Officers were forced to break the car window to extract the driver and take him into custody. The suspect now faces charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and three counts of prohibited driving. Police revealed that the individual is currently prohibited from driving anywhere in Canada due to a lengthy history of Criminal Code driving convictions.
Additional Weekend Incidents
Later on Saturday evening, Windsor police responded to a single-vehicle collision on E.C. Row Expressway near Walker Road. The driver had reportedly lost control while traveling westbound, causing the vehicle to enter a ditch. Windsor Fire & Rescue Services were called to extinguish a blaze after the car caught fire.
Police observed clear signs of impairment on the driver, including slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol. The 54-year-old man has been charged with impaired driving and refusal to provide a breath sample.
OPP Investigations Yield More Charges
The Ontario Provincial Police also contributed to the weekend's enforcement efforts, charging four additional drivers across Essex County. Their investigations began Saturday evening with a traffic complaint on Erie Street South in Leamington. This led to the arrest of a 32-year-old Windsor man who now faces two counts of impaired driving and two counts of having cannabis readily available in his vehicle.
Early Sunday morning, at approximately 4 a.m., OPP officers investigated another traffic complaint on Talbot Street West in Leamington. This resulted in charges against a 33-year-old Leamington man for two counts of impaired driving, being a novice driver with a blood alcohol count above zero, and having liquor in an open container in his vehicle.
Later on Sunday, OPP arrested a 32-year-old Leamington man following an investigation into a traffic complaint on Seacliff Drive near County Road 45 in Kingsville. He has been charged with impaired driving and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
