Frank Stronach Trial: Crown's Case Crumbles as Defence Avoids Testimony

The high-profile sexual assault trial of auto parts billionaire Frank Stronach has taken a dramatic turn, with the Crown's case appearing to collapse as defence lawyers systematically dismantle the allegations. Stronach, the 93-year-old founder of Magna International, is unlikely to take the stand, as his legal team argues there is no need given the prosecution's struggles.

Charges Dropped and Testimonies Challenged

Since the trial began nearly four weeks ago, defence lawyer Leora Shemesh has aggressively contested the dozen charges against Stronach. By Monday, the prosecution conceded it lacked sufficient evidence for five of the twelve counts, dropping charges related to three of the seven original complainants. Stronach has pleaded not guilty to all allegations.

The defence has called witnesses to challenge the accounts of the four remaining women who testified. For instance, one complainant alleged an assault in July 1981 at Stronach's Harbour Castle condo, but former staff testified there was no mirrored ceiling in the bedroom as described. Another witness, the complainant's alleged fiancé, denied sending flowers or being engaged to her, contradicting her timeline.

Defence Strategy and Crown's Troubles

Shemesh has accused some accusers of being "storytellers" with evolving accounts. She highlighted inconsistencies, such as a police report from 2015 where a complainant said the incident occurred in July 1980, not 1981, and noted uncertainty about consent. The defence plans to call a few more witnesses, including a "mystery witness," before arguing for a stay of proceedings to dismiss the remaining charges, alleging possible coaching by prosecutors.

Throughout the trial, Stronach has maintained his silence, supported by loyal former employees like personal assistant Jennifer Jackson. The Crown's case continues to face challenges, with Shemesh's effective cross-examinations pulling apart testimonies and raising doubts about the allegations' credibility.
