Two Men Charged in 2022 Maple Ridge Homicide Linked to Drug Trade
British Columbia homicide detectives have announced that two men are now facing charges in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in Maple Ridge in August 2022. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has described the killing as a targeted hit linked to the local drug trade.
Details of the Fatal Incident
Cory William Thomas, aged 33, was shot and killed on August 12, 2022, in the 11900-block of 216th Street in Maple Ridge. IHIT took over the investigation shortly after the incident, characterizing it as a deliberate attack connected to drug-related activities in the area.
After nearly four years of meticulous investigation, IHIT made significant progress in the case. The first arrest involved 26-year-old Richard Angelo Pignatelli of Maple Ridge. Prosecutors have charged Pignatelli with manslaughter with a firearm and break and enter in relation to Thomas's homicide. Pignatelli remains in custody awaiting a court appearance scheduled for Tuesday.
Second Arrest and Additional Charges
More recently, IHIT arrested a second individual in connection with the case. Last week, 27-year-old Kyle Raymond Edlund, also of Maple Ridge, was charged with second-degree murder with a firearm, break and enter, and possession of a loaded and prohibited or restricted firearm. Edlund is currently in custody pending his next court appearance.

Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT emphasized the seriousness of the investigation in a recent news release. "Murder is the most serious offence, which is why every step in the investigation must be informed, measured, and conducted with the utmost care," Fong stated. "Achieving charge approval is a significant milestone as this case moves forward."
The charges against both men represent a crucial development in a case that has remained active for nearly four years. IHIT's persistent efforts have brought the investigation to this pivotal stage, with both suspects now facing serious criminal charges related to Thomas's death.
