VPD Marine Division Executes Dramatic Yacht Rescue in Strait of Georgia

In a tense maritime operation, the Vancouver Police Department's marine division successfully rescued a woman from a motor yacht in the Strait of Georgia after she reported being assaulted. The incident unfolded on Thursday morning when authorities responded to a 911 call detailing the assault aboard the vessel.

High-Speed Pursuit in Challenging Conditions

The VPD located the 12-metre motor yacht heading west toward the Strait of Georgia around 6 p.m. Officers faced difficult maritime conditions including two-metre rolling waves and 15-knot winds during the pursuit. The department deployed its new flagship vessel, the R.G. McBeath V.C., which played a crucial role in the operation.

"This was a challenging operation for us," the VPD stated in an official communication. "Had it not been for the new R.G. McBeath vessel that we have, this may have been a much more difficult task — definitely upping the risk to members involved."

Tactical Maneuver Leads to Successful Rescue

During the pursuit, VPD officers executed a specialized tactical maneuver where their vessel was pinned against the side of the target yacht. This allowed the emergency response team to board the boat despite the heavy seas. Once aboard, officers discovered firearms and apprehended the suspect.

The woman who had reported the assault was rescued safely without injury and transported back to Vancouver along with the vessel. Police are now preparing to recommend charges of assault and forcible confinement against what they described as a "violent" male suspect.

Advanced Equipment Proves Critical

The successful operation highlighted the importance of the VPD's investment in marine resources. The R.G. McBeath, serving as the department's new flagship, demonstrated its capabilities in challenging conditions that included significant wave action and strong winds. The vessel's design and capabilities allowed officers to approach and secure the target yacht in conditions that might have prevented a successful intervention with older equipment.

This incident marks another example of the specialized training and equipment required for marine law enforcement operations in British Columbia's coastal waters. The Strait of Georgia, known for its variable conditions and heavy marine traffic, presents unique challenges for emergency responders.

The Vancouver Police Department has not released additional details about the relationship between the suspect and victim or the specific circumstances leading to the assault report. The investigation continues as authorities prepare formal charges against the apprehended individual.
