Windsor Police Officer Charged After Allegedly Firing Bullet Through Neighbor's Home
A Windsor police officer has been reassigned to administrative duties and faces criminal charges following an incident where he allegedly fired a bullet from his service-issued firearm through the walls of his neighbor's home. The event occurred in LaSalle, Ontario, prompting an investigation by local authorities.
Incident Details and Police Response
According to the LaSalle Police Service, the incident took place on a Monday morning shortly after 9 a.m. Officers responded to a report of property damage at a semi-detached house within their jurisdiction. Homeowners had discovered holes in their interior walls, which were later determined to be caused by a single gunshot.
Investigators revealed that the bullet was discharged inside the residence of an off-duty Windsor police officer who lives next door. The projectile penetrated a shared interior wall and then a second wall within the complainant's home. Two individuals were inside the damaged property at the time, but fortunately, no physical injuries were reported.
Charges and Professional Consequences
The LaSalle Police Service has charged Windsor police Constable Louis George, 49, with careless use of a firearm. Constable George, who has been a member of the Windsor Police Service since 2009, has been reassigned to desk duty pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings.
The Windsor Police Service issued a statement acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations. "We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and maintaining public trust," the agency said in a media release. Additionally, a professional standards misconduct investigation will be conducted following the conclusion of the criminal case.
Ongoing Legal Process and Information Blackout
Both the Windsor and LaSalle police services have stated that they will not provide further details about the incident as the matter is now before the courts. This decision underscores the legal sensitivity surrounding the case and the need to allow the judicial process to proceed without interference.
The incident raises questions about firearm safety and the conduct of law enforcement officers, even when off-duty. As the community awaits the court's decision, the reassignment of Constable George highlights the immediate administrative actions taken in response to such allegations.
