Calgary police reported that a bag thief was struck by a truck while attempting to flee the scene of a theft in the Bridgeland neighbourhood on Friday, June 26, 2026. The incident occurred around noon on 9th Street between McDougall Road and Centre Avenue N.E., according to investigators.

Details of the incident

First responders were called to MacDougall Road and 9th Street N.E. for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian and a passing trailer and truck, the Calgary Police Service said in a news release. The victim had allegedly stolen a bag from someone sitting on a park bench nearby and was attempting to leave the crime scene when he ran into northbound traffic.

The man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. As of Friday night, police were still trying to identify the individual. Authorities noted that alcohol, drugs, or speed on the part of the driver were not believed to be factors in the collision.
