The annual New Year's Eve event at Eau Claire Plaza and Prince's Island Park is confirmed to proceed on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, from 8 p.m., offering Calgarians a warm, Chinook-wind-blessed venue for festivities.
Festival Plans Unaffected by Infrastructure Crisis
Event organizers have assured the public that the celebration will go on "as per usual." Dinou Marlett, the NYE Event Coordinator, clarified that the event's operations are not impacted because they are "not actually working with any water or whatever." The city expects the popular fireworks display, which has historically drawn crowds of approximately 15,000 people, to cap off the night as scheduled.
Attendees can look forward to a full slate of activities. The evening will feature food trucks, cozy fire pits, and family-friendly options like a lagoon skating rink. Musical entertainment kicks off with a DJ at 9 p.m., while stilt walkers and a luminous fire parade—a procession of lantern carriers moving from the Sheraton hotel through Prince's Island Park—will add to the magical atmosphere.
Water Main Break Triggers Severe Restrictions
The celebratory mood is tempered by a significant infrastructure failure. Earlier this week, the city's most critical feeder water main, which supplies about 60% of Calgary, ruptured for at least the third time in two years. The break occurred on 16th Avenue N.W. near Sarcee Trail, causing substantial flooding that submerged vehicles and buckled pavement.
In response, the city has enacted Stage 4 water restrictions, mandating a full pause on all outdoor water use for every resident. Neighbourhoods directly affected by the break are under a boil-water advisory, and all Calgarians are being urged to drastically reduce their water consumption. The flooded road remained closed with abandoned vehicles still on site as of Wednesday morning, while city crews worked to manage the damage.
Transportation and Access for Revellers
To facilitate access to the downtown celebration, the city will provide free shuttle bus service from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Pick-up locations are set for the Jubilee Auditorium and the Max Bell Centre. Attendees should plan for significant road closures around the event site. Memorial Drive and roads in adjacent areas like Crescent Heights and Rosedale will be closed from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., barring emergency access.
