Driver charged in fatal February Highway 17 crash in Ontario

Ontario Provincial Police have charged a driver in connection with a fatal crash on Highway 17 that occurred in February in northern Ontario. The collision, which took place near the community of Nipigon, resulted in the death of one individual and sent another to hospital with serious injuries.

Details of the crash

Police responded to the two-vehicle collision on February 22 at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Highway 17, just east of Nipigon. Investigation revealed that a pickup truck crossed the centre line and struck an oncoming SUV. The driver of the SUV, a 54-year-old man from Thunder Bay, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck, a 38-year-old man from Nipigon, was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Following an extensive investigation, OPP charged the pickup truck driver with dangerous driving causing death and impaired driving causing death. He was also charged with failing to provide a breath sample. The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Thunder Bay on July 15.

“This tragic incident has devastated a family and community,” said OPP Constable Marie Ford. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time. We urge all drivers to make responsible choices behind the wheel.”

Highway 17 is a major route in northern Ontario, and collisions on this stretch have raised concerns about road safety. According to OPP data, there have been 12 fatal collisions on Highway 17 in the region so far this year, resulting in 15 deaths. Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
