Montreal residents and visitors should plan ahead as the city prepares for two major holidays: Fête Nationale du Quebec on June 24 and Canada Day on July 1. Government offices, banks, and many businesses will be closed or operate on reduced hours.
Fête Nationale du Quebec (June 24)
On June 24, all federal and provincial government offices, as well as municipal services, will be closed. Canada Post will not deliver mail. Banks and most financial institutions will be shut. The Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and Service Canada centres will be closed.
Grocery stores and shopping malls may operate on reduced hours; check individual locations. The Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) stores will be closed, but some convenience stores may remain open. Public transit will run on a holiday schedule.
Canada Day (July 1)
On July 1, similar closures apply: government offices, banks, and Canada Post will be closed. Most SAQ stores will be closed, but some grocery stores and malls may be open with limited hours. Public transit will operate on a holiday schedule.
Montreal's municipal services, including garbage collection, will be suspended on both holidays. Residents are advised to check their local borough's website for specific information.
Entertainment and Events
Both holidays feature fireworks, parades, and concerts. For Fête Nationale, the traditional parade and outdoor shows will take place in downtown Montreal. Canada Day celebrations include a fireworks display at the Old Port and various community events.
According to the City of Montreal, "We encourage everyone to enjoy the festivities safely and to plan ahead for closures."
