Police Presence Cleared After Hitchhiker Warning on Highway 11
Ontario Provincial Police have cleared a police presence on Highway 11 after drivers were advised not to pick up hitchhikers earlier this week. The incident, which drew significant attention, concluded without any charges being laid.
According to OPP officials, the situation began when reports emerged of individuals attempting to hitchhike along the busy highway. Officers were dispatched to the area to ensure public safety and to warn motorists about the potential dangers of stopping for hitchhikers.
"We want to remind everyone that picking up hitchhikers on highways is extremely risky and not recommended," said OPP Constable Mark Johnson. "Our priority was to ensure the safety of both drivers and pedestrians."
The police presence, which included multiple cruisers and a temporary road closure, was lifted after several hours. No injuries or accidents were reported during the operation.
Transportation officials also weighed in, noting that hitchhiking on major highways is prohibited under the Highway Traffic Act. "Drivers should never stop on the highway to pick up or drop off passengers, as it creates a serious hazard," said Ministry of Transportation spokesperson Lisa Tran.
