All five remaining candidates in the race to lead the Conservative Party of British Columbia are set to participate in a live debate and discussion on Tuesday evening. The event, co-hosted by Vancouver Sun political columnist Vaughn Palmer and Stuart McNish of Conversations Live, will be streamed online starting at 5 p.m.
Candidates and Their Backgrounds
The candidates bring diverse experiences to the leadership contest. Iain Black served as a cabinet minister in Gordon Campbell's B.C. Liberal government. Caroline Elliott also worked for Campbell and has received endorsements from both the former premier and former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney. Kerry-Lynne Findlay is a longtime Conservative MP and lawyer who lost her seat in the last federal election. Yuri Fulmer is the chancellor of Capilano University and owns several dozen A&W restaurants. Peter Milobar, the MLA for Kamloops Centre and a former mayor of Kamloops, is backed by several Conservative MLAs.
Key Issues and How to Participate
The debate will cover critical topics including the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), resource development, and the economy. Viewers can watch the live stream and submit questions for the candidates. The new leader, chosen by party members in May, is expected to lead the Conservatives into the next provincial election.
