Toronto Man's Death at Funeral Raises Questions: Was It Tied to Park Shooting?
Toronto Man's Death: Tied to Park Shooting?

As a Jewish Toronto family gathered for a funeral at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel on Sunday, many questions remained unanswered about the mysterious death of Daniel Stopnicki. Family friends told the Toronto Sun that if not for the funeral obituary stating he died 'tragically,' the public would not know he was slain.

'He was shot while walking his dog' near his home, a family friend said. Information about where the shooting occurred has not been officially released.

Toronto Police responded to a homicide in Wenderly Park, near Glencairn and Marlee Avenues, on Thursday afternoon, where a man was shot to death. A 60-year-old was taken into custody. Police spokesperson Shannon Eames stated, 'We will release that information once Homicide is ready,' regarding charges. She confirmed the incident was targeted. The victim's name will be released after next of kin notification.

So it remains a riddle. An unnamed man shot dead in a park, a man friends say was shot walking his dog, and a funeral where mourners were asked to donate to victims of violence. An unnamed person is arrested, but police are not filling in the blanks.

Inside Wenderly Park, a small vigil with one bouquet of flowers and a candle marks the shooting location. The motive has not been revealed.

Stopnicki's death notice says he died 'tragically on Thursday, April 30, 2026.' He was a popular gamer who taught gaming and animation at Seneca College. The notice describes him as beloved husband of Tatyana, cherished son of Michal, Roberto, and Becky, and dear brother and brother-in-law. Memorial donations are requested for the Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime.

Amid concerns about violence against the Jewish community, including shootings at synagogues and retired Inspector Hank Idsinga's revelations about anti-Jewish sentiments in police ranks, transparency from police is in the public interest. Recent incidents, such as an Orbeez-gun shooting toward Jewish people and a man in tactical gear carrying a mock assault rifle at Trinity Bellwoods Park, add to the unease.

As the flame burns at the vigil, more questions than answers remain: Who was slain in Wenderly Park? Who was arrested? What are the charges? What was the motive?
