Necessities of Life

In response to Brian Lilley's column "Judge's 'view' over law" (May 26), reader Carol-Faye Petricko of Toronto reflects on Judge Michael Gibson's ruling that mandates the Canadian government to provide "adequate" housing with "all necessary amenities." Petricko, a direct descendant of those who suffered deprivation, questions whether she can make a retroactive claim for compensation for the hardship her grandparents endured. They raised eight children in an isolated farmhouse on the rock-strewn wilderness of the Canadian Shield, with only an outdoor privy as an amenity. Petricko concludes that the ruling is absurd and should be thrown out.

Always Complaining

Reader Lloyd Atkins of Vernon, B.C., comments on the adage "a leopard cannot change its spots," applying it to Pierre Poilievre. Atkins argues that Canadians have been subjected to Poilievre's constant negative "attack-dog" criticisms. He accuses Poilievre of whining about Mark Carney building bridges with global leaders and blaming Carney for Canada's "technical" recession, which Atkins attributes to the unprincipled US president. Atkins notes that many countries face similar financial crises and compares Carney's and Poilievre's resumes, stating Carney is better qualified to be PM. He says there is no place for a disingenuous carping critic when stakes are high.

The editorial response counters that it is ridiculous to blame President Donald Trump for Canada's recession, noting the country has been in steady decline for a decade and Carney's tinkering with previous policies is not enough.
