A Black-led youth support organization in Nova Scotia is expressing shock and disappointment after the provincial government abruptly cut $317,000 in funding. LOVE Nova Scotia, which provides mentorship and programming for marginalized youth, says the decision came without warning and threatens the future of several key initiatives.
Sudden Funding Loss
The organization learned of the cut earlier this week, leaving staff and participants scrambling to adjust. The funding was previously allocated through the province's community grants program. LOVE Nova Scotia's executive director described the move as devastating, noting that the money supported after-school programs, leadership training, and mental health resources.
Impact on Youth
More than 200 young people rely on LOVE Nova Scotia's services annually. Without the funding, the organization may have to reduce programming or close some locations. Participants and families have voiced concern, calling on the province to reverse the decision.
The provincial government has not provided a detailed explanation for the cut, but a spokesperson cited budget reallocations. Opposition critics argue the move disproportionately affects Black communities and undermines efforts to address systemic inequities.
LOVE Nova Scotia is now seeking alternative funding sources and community support to sustain its operations. The organization plans to meet with government officials in the coming weeks to appeal the decision.
