Blue Jays Trio Takes on Spittin' Chiclets in Epic Golf Battle
In a unique crossover event that blended sports, entertainment, and plenty of alcohol, three Toronto Blue Jays players recently faced off against the hosts of the wildly popular Spittin' Chiclets podcast in a golf match that was equal parts competition and comedy. The encounter, which took place in Clearwater, Florida, in early February before the start of spring training, featured Blue Jays outfielder Nathan Lukes, infielder Ernie Clement, and second baseman Davis Schneider going head-to-head with former NHL players Paul Bissonnette, Ryan Whitney, and Keith Yandle.
A Recipe for Chaos on the Course
The showdown was part of the Chiclets' Sandbagger Scramble series, where the podcast hosts challenge guests from various backgrounds. This particular episode, which dropped late last week and runs for 84 minutes, quickly devolved into what Lukes described as "craziness." "When you mix golf and alcohol and a bunch of hockey dudes, it gets a little rowdy," Lukes said. "It was unbelievable." The match was played at Cove Cay Golf Club and was filled with R-rated banter, strategic drinking games, and a comeback victory for the Chiclets team.
The Role of 'Birdie Juice' in the Defeat
A key factor in the Blue Jays' loss was the tradition of "birdie juice," where any player making a birdie requires the entire group to take a shot of alcohol. In this case, the drink of choice was Pink Whitney, a vodka and pink lemonade cocktail associated with Ryan Whitney. The birdies came frequently early in the round, leading to a boozy atmosphere that the Jays believe impacted their performance. "I think we might have to get them wrecked," Whitney remarked on the fourth hole, acknowledging the Jays' initial strong play.
Clement, who helped arrange the match along with Schneider, admitted that the Chiclets hosts were seasoned veterans at this type of event. "They know what they're doing out there in terms of strategy," Clement said. "And they've been there before." By the back nine, Clement had even joined Bissonnette in playing barefoot, adding to the casual, fun-loving vibe.
Trash Talk and Baseball Banter
The match was punctuated by relentless trash talk, with the Chiclets hosts not holding back. Whitney quipped, "You're about to watch the Blue Jays choke another one away," while Yandle referenced the Jays' past playoff struggles. The Blue Jays gave as good as they got, with Clement firing back at Bissonnette about his career goal-scoring record. The editing of the video added a final jab, displaying "Blue Jays choke again" on the score graphic after the Chiclets secured their win on the 18th hole.
Beyond the jokes, the conversation turned serious at times, with the group discussing the Blue Jays' 2025 American League championship season and the potential for a labour disruption in baseball. Schneider expressed concern about a possible lockout, to which Whitney related his experiences from the 2004-05 NHL lockout. "The owners aren't going to lose. They'll just wait you out," Whitney advised.
Aftermath and Hopes for a Rematch
The video quickly gained traction online, approaching half a million views by Monday morning, with Bissonnette promoting it on social media. The Blue Jays players are eager for a rematch, believing they have learned from their mistakes. "I think we take it easy on the birdie juice and maybe things go differently," Clement said. Despite the loss, all participants emphasized the fun and camaraderie of the event. "It was way too much fun," Clement concluded, highlighting the unique blend of sports and entertainment that made the showdown memorable.
