Maple Leafs' Michael Pezzetta Draws In Against Bruins as Jarnkrok Sits Out
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Michael Pezzetta is set to make his third appearance with the team since his recall from the Toronto Marlies, as the Leafs prepare to face the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Tuesday night. Coach Craig Berube confirmed the lineup change, emphasizing the need for physicality in the high-stakes matchup.
Berube's Strategy for Bruins Showdown
In a media briefing in Boston, Berube outlined his reasoning for inserting Pezzetta into the lineup. "I just think Boston and what they bring in this building, we are going to need some physicality," Berube stated. "That’s why he is in." This move sees winger Calle Jarnkrok scratched, while defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson will play after an early departure from practice on Monday. Morgan Rielly returns after missing one game with a lower-body injury, though Berube did not specify which defenseman will be benched.
Pezzetta has accumulated one fight and nine penalty minutes in his first two games with the Leafs, showcasing his aggressive style. Meanwhile, in goal, Anthony Stolarz will start for Toronto, with Jeremy Swayman manning the net for the Bruins.
Fraser Minten's Growth with Bruins
The game also presents an opportunity for 21-year-old centre Fraser Minten, traded from the Leafs to the Bruins a year ago, to prove his worth. Bruins coach Marco Sturm praised Minten's development, noting, "He’s still growing, he is still a kid, but he’s been excellent. Fun to watch, fun to be a part of, to see him grow as a man on and off the ice." Sturm added that Minten, who looks "like a 15-year-old," has room to fill out physically and improve his overall game.
Minten is currently skating on the top Bruins line alongside David Pastrnak. Reflecting on his season, Minten said, "It’s nice to be in really meaningful games every night right now and it’s a super-fun team. It has been a fun year, so hopefully we can keep it going into the post-season." The Bruins enter the game holding the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, while the Leafs trail by 14 points.
Post-Game Comments and Team Dynamics
Addressing recent post-game comments from Easton Cowan and Berube after a loss to the Ottawa Senators, Berube clarified the situation. Cowan had remarked that an early power-play goal "deflated us a bit," to which Berube responded by calling it a "copout." On Tuesday, Berube downplayed the incident, saying, "I think Easton is handling everything fine. He makes mistakes and understands them and wants to correct them. But that’s not going to make him play a different game." He emphasized Cowan's maturity and commitment to his playing style.
The Leafs are on a mentors trip, with Rielly bringing former teammate Jake Gardiner along, before returning home to host the New York Rangers on Wednesday night. As the team navigates lineup adjustments and player development, this Bruins clash serves as a critical test in their ongoing season.
