The New York Mets used a trio of solo home runs to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre, handing the slumping Blue Jays their fourth loss in five games.
Alvarez, Baty, and Marte go deep
Francisco Alvarez opened the scoring in the fifth inning with a solo shot off Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman. Brett Baty followed with a homer in the sixth, and Starling Marte added another in the seventh to provide all the offense the Mets needed.
Mets starter David Peterson pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out seven and walking two. The bullpen trio of Drew Smith, Adam Ottavino, and Edwin Díaz completed the shutout, with Díaz earning his 18th save of the season.
Blue Jays offense sputters again
The Blue Jays managed only five hits on the night, with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. going 1-for-4 and Bo Bichette 0-for-4. Toronto has now scored just two runs in their last two games, both losses.
Gausman took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings, striking out eight and walking one. He fell to 8-5 on the season.
Mets gain ground in NL East
The win moved the Mets to 42-38 on the season, pulling them within 3.5 games of the first-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East. The Blue Jays dropped to 44-36, remaining second in the AL East behind the New York Yankees.
"We're swinging the bats well and pitching has been outstanding," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said after the game. "It's a good combination."
The two teams continue their three-game series Wednesday night, with the Mets sending left-hander Jose Quintana to the mound against Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt.
