The Saskatchewan Roughriders received contributions from all three phases of the game in a bounceback win on Friday night, defeating the Ottawa Redblacks 27-22 at TD Place Stadium in the nation's capital. Rookie Mathew Sexton returned a punt 101 yards for a touchdown, quarterback Trevor Harris threw two touchdown passes, and the defence forced a crucial turnover on downs to secure the victory in Week 5 of the CFL season.
Early Struggles for Saskatchewan
The Roughriders improved to 3-1 with the win, rebounding from a loss the previous week, while the Redblacks dropped to 0-4. However, the game did not start well for the Green and White. On the second offensive play of the game, Ottawa's defensive back Alonzo Addae deflected a pass from Harris into the air, and former Roughriders linebacker A.J. Allen intercepted it.
That turnover led to a touchdown drive by former Roughrider quarterback Jake Maier, who orchestrated an eight-play, 47-yard drive capped by a 15-yard scoring pass to receiver Cade McDonald. Another former Roughrider, kicker Brett Lauther, added the convert to make it 7-0 Ottawa early in the first quarter.
Special Teams Turn the Tide
Minutes later, Ottawa's special teams unit struck again as Brian Cole blocked a punt by Saskatchewan's Oscar Chapman, giving the Redblacks possession at the Roughriders' 31-yard line. That led to a 32-yard field goal by Lauther, extending Ottawa's lead to 10-0.
Saskatchewan's offence finally woke up on their fourth offensive series. Harris led the Roughriders on a 10-play, 70-yard drive, finishing with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Dhel Duncan-Busby to cut the lead to 10-7.
Second-Quarter Turnaround
In the second quarter, the Roughriders' special teams forced a turnover when Nick Wiebe stripped Kalil Pimpleton of the ball on a punt return and recovered the fumble. Saskatchewan turned that into a 21-yard field goal by Alex Hale to tie the game 10-10.
The teams traded field goals before halftime, leaving the score tied 13-13 at the break.
Sexton's 101-Yard Punt Return
In the second half, another special teams play changed the course of the game. Sexton, starting in place of James Letcher (who was placed on the six-game injured list), returned a punt 101 yards up the sideline for a touchdown, putting Saskatchewan ahead 20-13.
Ottawa added a field goal to make it 20-16, but Harris responded with an eight-play, 70-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 23-yard scoring pass to KeeSean Johnson, who finished with over 100 receiving yards. That put Saskatchewan up 27-16 through three quarters.
Redblacks Rally Falls Short
Maier quickly responded for the Redblacks, hitting Justin Hardy for a pair of first downs before a deep throw to Eugene Lewis to the one-yard line. Short-yardage quarterback Brysen Barnes then sneaked into the end zone for a touchdown, but the two-point convert attempt failed, leaving the score 27-22.
The Roughriders' defence held firm in the final minutes, forcing a turnover on downs to seal the victory. According to head coach Corey Mace, the team's ability to execute in all three phases was key to the bounceback win.
