Saskatoon Berries Announce Major Stadium Upgrades for 2026 WCBL Season
The Saskatoon Berries are gearing up for an exciting 2026 Western Canadian Baseball League season with significant enhancements to their home ballpark. Following a record-breaking 2025 campaign where they posted a league-best 46-9 record before falling to the Regina Red Sox in the East Division finals, the team is making substantial investments to improve the fan experience.
Expanded Seating and Premium Amenities
A major construction project will begin this spring at Cairns Field, located within the Gordie Howe Sports Complex. The initiative involves installing 352 new seats in sections directly behind home plate, providing fans with an unparalleled view of the action. These premium seating areas will complement the existing 'B.I.P.' section, which will be relocated to enhance proximity to the field.
"The increased seating, along with the new sections behind home plate, just expands the big-league atmosphere it will bring to the Saskatoon Berries at Cairns Field," stated Bryan Kosteroski, chairperson for the Gordie Howe Sports Complex.
Team president Steve Hildebrand emphasized the necessity of these upgrades, noting, "Berries fans have shown up and proven their support for baseball in Saskatoon, and we simply don't have enough space for everyone to come out and enjoy the entertainment. This project will not only allow more fans to get into the ballpark but also provides a comfortable, premium seating space to enjoy the games."
Hosting the 2026 WCBL All-Star Extravaganza
In addition to the stadium improvements, the Berries have been selected to host the 2026 WCBL All-Star Game and Home Run Derby. This marks a historic moment for the league, as the event will expand to a two-day format for the first time, taking place on July 18 and 19. Festivities will include:
- A competitive home run derby showcasing the league's top power hitters
- A bunt contest highlighting fundamental skills
- A live concert adding to the celebratory atmosphere
- Additional fan engagement activities throughout the weekend
Season Preparation and Academy Success
Head coach Joe Carnahan is set to return for the 2026 season, providing continuity and leadership as the team builds on its recent success. Player signings will be announced later this month, with training camp scheduled to begin on May 25.
The Saskatoon Berries Baseball Academy continues to thrive, with Hildebrand describing it as "the hottest and fastest growing academy in Saskatchewan." The program is gaining recognition from NCAA Division One and junior colleges across the United States, highlighting its role in developing young talent.
Ticket Information and Timeline
Current season ticket holders will have priority access to upgrade to the new home plate seating sections. Sales to the general public commenced on February 3. Construction is expected to be completed in time for opening day on May 30, ensuring fans can enjoy the enhanced facilities from the start of the season.
These developments underscore the Berries' commitment to elevating both the on-field product and the overall fan experience, positioning Saskatoon as a premier destination for baseball in Western Canada.
