The City of Surrey, British Columbia, has announced plans to construct a new 10,000-seat arena that will become the home of the Western Hockey League's (WHL) Vancouver Giants. The project, revealed on June 30, 2026, aims to replace the team's current venue, the Langley Events Centre, which has a capacity of 5,276.
Project Details and Timeline
The new arena will be located in Surrey's City Centre district, near the existing Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex. According to city officials, construction is expected to begin in early 2027, with completion targeted for the 2029-2030 WHL season. The total cost is estimated at $200 million, funded through a combination of municipal bonds, provincial grants, and private investment.
Mayor Brenda Locke stated, "This arena will be a cornerstone of our community, providing a world-class facility for sports and entertainment while driving economic growth in Surrey." The Vancouver Giants' owner, Ron Toigo, expressed enthusiasm: "We are thrilled to bring Giants hockey to Surrey and look forward to building a new legacy in this vibrant city."
Economic and Community Impact
The arena is projected to create 1,500 construction jobs and 300 permanent positions once operational. It will host not only WHL games but also concerts, family shows, and community events, attracting an estimated 500,000 visitors annually. The facility will include 20 luxury suites, a restaurant, and a team store.
Surrey, the second-largest city in British Columbia with a population of over 600,000, has been seeking a major sports venue to complement its growing downtown. The arena is part of a broader $1.5 billion redevelopment plan for the City Centre area, which includes new residential towers, transit upgrades, and public spaces.
Reaction from the WHL and Fans
WHL Commissioner Ron Robison praised the announcement: "This state-of-the-art arena will enhance the fan experience and support the development of young hockey talent. It's a significant investment in the future of the WHL." The Vancouver Giants, established in 2001, have won two WHL championships and produced numerous NHL players, including Evander Kane and Brendan Gallagher.
Season ticket holder Sarah Mitchell said, "I'm excited about the move to Surrey. The new arena will be easier to access and will bring more energy to the games." The team's average attendance last season was 4,200, and officials expect that to increase with the new location.
