McKenna dreams of No. 1 pick as Leafs hold top NHL draft selection
McKenna dreams of Leafs picking him first in NHL draft

Top prospect Michael McKenna expressed excitement about the possibility of being selected first overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs, who hold the top pick at the 2026 NHL draft in Buffalo. 'I'd be pumped,' McKenna said, according to The Canadian Press.

Leafs secure No. 1 pick for first time

The Maple Leafs won the draft lottery in May, marking the first time in franchise history they hold the first overall selection. The draft takes place June 26-27 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.

McKenna, an 18-year-old center from Calgary, is widely considered the top prospect available. He recorded 34 goals and 67 assists in 68 games last season with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League.

McKenna's reaction to potential selection

'It would be a dream come true to play for such a historic organization,' McKenna said. 'I grew up watching the Leafs, and to have the chance to be part of their future is incredible.'

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound forward also noted the pressure of being a top pick. 'There are high expectations, but I'm ready to work hard and prove myself at the next level.'

Leafs' draft strategy and team needs

Toronto general manager Brad Treliving has indicated the team will likely select McKenna, but has not ruled out trading the pick. 'We're open to all possibilities, but we're excited about the talent at the top of the draft,' Treliving said.

The Maple Leafs have several needs, including a top-six forward and defensive depth. McKenna would address the forward need, potentially slotting into the lineup as early as next season.

Historical context of No. 1 picks

The last time a Canadian team held the first overall pick was in 2015, when the Edmonton Oilers selected Connor McDavid. Since then, top picks have included Auston Matthews (2016, Leafs via lottery), Nico Hischier (2017, New Jersey), and Connor Bedard (2023, Chicago).

McKenna would be the first player drafted first overall by the Maple Leafs since they selected Mats Sundin in 1989 (as the Quebec Nordiques).
